This brief publication details “where to find and how to use these statistics” as a tool for teachers, parents, and the community to “engage policymakers on critical questions of resource allocation, school accountability, and program effectiveness.” This publication addresses the correct way to approach data, and it speaks to the dangers of misinterpreting data which may result in false conclusions about what the data means to convey. The correct interpretation of data from Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is specifically addressed in this publication since the ESSA includes state-published data on how students, including ELLs, are performing in reading, math, and graduation rates.
A Guide to Finding and Understanding English Language Learner Data is a publication by Dr. Julie Sugarman, a Senior Policy Analyst for PreK-12 Education at MPI. Dr. Sugarman is a proponent of immigrant and ELL studies, including her focus on “policies, funding mechanisms, and district- and school-level practices that support high-quality instructional services [for these demographics].”
